Stroke prevalence declines

Posted On Fri, December 10, 2010

Efforts to reduce the number of fatalities from stroke appear to be working. Research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now ranks stroke as the fourth most common cause of death, according to 2008 mortality rate information.

The CDC says the condition held steady as the third leading cause of death for many years. While stroke fatalities have declined somewhat, there are now more respiratory-related deaths. Nearly half of all deaths in 2008 stemmed from cancer or heart disease.

While there are many health conditions that one cannot avoid, there are actions that can be taken to reduce the likelihood of developing many ailments.

Most experts advise people to get a half-hour of exercise five days a week. Walking at a fast pace is often cited as a good form of physical activity to squeeze into a person's schedule.

Eating a balanced diet can also contribute to a person's overall well-being. While appropriate caloric levels vary by individual, most medical professionals recommend consuming a variety of fruits, vegetables and grains. Following such lifestyle suggestions can lead to lower life insurance premiums.
