Poll: Some Americans think vaccines pose danger

Posted On Fri, September 30, 2011

A recent poll found that more than 25 percent of Americans are worried about how safe vaccines are.

The Thomson Reuters-NPR Health Poll also found that more than 21 percent think vaccines put children at risk of developing autism. Older Americans weren't as concerned with vaccination worries, as less than 13 percent have had negative thoughts regarding the preventative treatments. Approximately 28 percent of those under the age of 35 that have children thought poorly of vaccinations.

"Ironically, these survey results are a testament to the effectiveness of vaccines: older people remember what illnesses like polio did to cripple and kill patients, but the younger generation has never seen someone with polio," said Raymond Fabius, chief medical officer at the healthcare business of Thomson Reuters.

A total of 24 percent of those polled have changed their views on vaccinations, the report added. Nearly 60 percent of those respondents think negatively of the treatment.

Consumers who are concerned about being able to afford health insurance may want to shop around for the best rates. This may be a smart idea when looking for an improved plan.
