Poll: Joblessness top concern for teens

Posted On Thu, January 31, 2013

While young people have no shortage of issues that they have to deal with in their journey toward adulthood, one of the biggest problems they fear is not being able to find a job upon graduation from college.

According to a recent poll conducted by the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, teenagers listed access to jobs, training and college opportunities as the most pressing issue facing them today. Second to this was the prevalence of youth violence, specifically as it relates to shootings and bullying from peers.

Based on the assessments of survey data from 1,000 young adults spanning 13 through 17 years of age, more than 60 percent cited jobs and employment following their college career as their top concern.

When respondents were asked whether they thought political leaders had addressed this issue last year, 82 percent of teens said that they did not.

"In the current economy, in which jobs for young people are scarce and college tuition rates outpace the inflation rate - it is clear why our youth are most concerned about their education and career opportunities," said Rick Goings, chairman of Tupperware Brands, which helped sponsor the BGCA's survey.

Jim Clark, president CEO of BGCA, added that it's similarly unfortunate that so many youths believe America's legislators have not done their jobs in fixing the jobless issue.

What many contend lawmakers have addressed is young people's access to healthcare and keeping their health insurance rates low. Should teens not be able to find a full-time job in their early 20s, they'll still be able to stay on their parents' plan until they're 26 years old, as mandated under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
