New auto insurance changes on the way for Wisconsin

People who live in Wisconsin may see their auto insurance rates go up soon.

According to the Green Bay, Wisconsin, television station NBC 26, a new law requiring uninsured motorist coverage on all auto insurance policies is set to take effect on November 1 of this year. Furthermore, minimums on insurance policy coverage will see an increase as well.

John Allen, an insurance agent in the area, told the station that the result will be higher insurance costs for people in the state.

"That will affect everybody differently, depending on how much coverage each person has," Allen said.

According to the Insurance Information Institute, one out of every seven drivers in the country does not have auto insurance. As a result, many consumers may consider getting additional coverage in the event they get into an accident with someone who does not have coverage.

Other insurance laws are set to take hold as well in Wisconsin. For example, the station reported that a new law will make auto insurance mandatory for drivers on January 1 of 2010. Once that law takes effect, New Hampshire will be the only state that does not require auto insurance coverage.
