Homeowners insurance can offer protection from natural disasters

Posted On Fri, September 10, 2010

Hurricanes, fires, and floods are a few natural disasters that can quickly happen and ruin a person's biggest investment - their home. In the middle of hurricane season, people should consider revisiting their homeowners insurance coverage.

Without homeowners insurance, a person could face an insurmountable amount of costs. The Institute for Business and Home Safety says that 18 years ago, Hurricane Andrew caused approximately $24 billion in 2009 dollars in damage.

The Insurance Information Institute recommends homeowners purchase enough insurance to cover the cost of their home, possessions, and liability to others.

IBHS president and CEO Julie Rochnan says that in addition to homeowners insurance, there are a few other things people should do to prepare for a hurricane.

"Historically, the majority of the most dangerous and damaging hurricanes occur between August and October," says Rochman. "Don't wait until a hurricane warning is issued in your area. Act now to prepare your property so that your family, home and possessions are better protected when a storm hits."

Homeowners should seal their windows and doors to help keep water and debris from entering their home, recommends IBHS. It's also suggested that lawn furniture be properly stored so it doesn't become a projectile and break a window.
