Emergency room visits jump by 13 million

Posted On Mon, October 24, 2011

A recent study from the American College of Emergency Physicians found that emergency room visits increased by close to 10 percent in 2009, despite a majority of these consumers owning health insurance.

In total, 136 million emergency room visits occurred in 2009, which is 13 million more than the previous year, the study noted. More than four in five of the patients during this time entered the emergency room with proper health insurance. Less than 10 percent of these people were considered non-urgent.

"There can be no meaningful health care reform or cost control without liability reform," said Dr. David Seaberg, ACEP's president. "One of the new studies shows emergency physicians applying a different standard of admission to their patients than they would apply to themselves largely because of concerns about being sued."

Those who have to go to the emergency room in order to be taken care of on a regular basis may not have the best insurance plan. By obtaining health insurance quotes, a consumer can find competitive rates that still don't skimp on coverage.
