Programs
In 2004, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina developed the Healthy Lifestyle Choice, an educational program that helps thousands of its members live healthier. It teaches that small lifestyle changes, such as eating more fruits and vegetables, and increasing physical activity, has been proven to lower cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, obtain ideal weight and decrease the incidents of diabetes, arthritis, coronary heart disease, as well as many other health problems. On April 7, 2005, the FitKidsNC program was adopted by the state board of education, in conjunction with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, that requires students to engage in at least 30 minutes of vigorous, physical activity each day in grades Kindergarten through 8th Grade.
