In 2004, Anthem, Inc. merged with WellPoint Health Networks to form the largest health insurance company in the United States. The new company began buying other Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies. To date, they have bought 14 Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies nationwide. Eleven of these companies have become Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies.
