Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nevada began in 1942 as part of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. On December 31, 1996, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Colorado merged with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nevada and the two companies became simply Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Colorado. In the meantime, Anthem, Inc. had merged with WellPoint Health Networks and had changed from a not-for-profit, mutual insurance company to a publicly traded for-profit company. At that time, Anthem, Inc. was buying Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies in a number of states and had by that time acquired 14 of these companies. Anthem, Inc. divided Colorado and Nevada into two companies and renamed them Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nevada and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Colorado.
