Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska began in 1939 as The Associated Hospital Service of Nebraska (later changed to Blue Cross of Nebraska). In 1944, six physicians began the Nebraska Surgical Plan (later changed to Blue Shield of Nebraska). In 1974, the two companies merged and became Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska, the largest health insurer in the state.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska today has grown to serve more than 550,000 members. All hospitals and 93% of physicians in Nebraska are part of the network. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska also includes a network of nearly 500 pharmacies throughout the state. Also, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska maintains offices in Omaha, Lincoln, and Grand Island for the convenience of its members.
