There are 2 parts to the current Medicare system, Part A and Part B. Health care, hospital care, and other related expenses are covered by Part A coverage, which is free. Part B requires you to pay a premium and covers other care such as doctor visits, physical therapy, and lab tests.

What Medicare Part A Does NOT Cover

• Hospital deductible (per illness), $912 in 2005
• Hospital coinsurance payments, $228 to $456 per day in 2005 ($228 for days 61 to 90 and $456 for up to 150 days)
• Hospital needs beyond 150 days
• Nursing services beyond 100 days (per illness)
• Nursing services coinsurance payments, $114 per day in 2005 (for days 21 to 100)
• Coverage is extremely restricted for home health nursing and aide services in general

What Medicare Part B Does NOT Cover

• Deductible
• 20% coinsurance payment
• Bills that are greater than the Medicare approved amount
• Prescription medication coverage is limited to extreme situations and in general is not covered.

Medicare is changing
