It began with seven hospitals and a small group of doctors. Group Hospital Services later became known as Blue Cross of Kansas City. By the end of the year, the company had grown to ten hospitals and about 14,000 members. In 1943, Kansas City Blue Shield was formed to provide a prepayment plan for physician services. In 1950, Kansas City Blue Shield extended benefits to individuals who were not covered by an employer. Kansas City became the first Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plan in the country to provide this new service. For the first time, health insurance was available to everyone in the community. In 1982, the Kansas City Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plans merged creating Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City. Since then, the company has grown to serve more than 880,000 members in the greater Kansas City metropolitan community. Service AreaToday, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas City has expanded to include 30 counties in northwestern Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte Counties in Kansas. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City, in its 65-year history, has become the largest market in the Kansas City area; more than twice the size of the company’s nearest competitor.
