How Liability Insurance Works

Liability coverage is really a combination of two different types of insurance: coverage for property damage and coverage for bodily injury. This type of coverage protects a driver from the cost of personal injury to others through bodily injury coverage. It also protects a driver from the cost of damage caused to any physical property through property damage coverage.

Liability auto insurance policies usually include three important numbers (like 50/100/25). These numbers refer to the amount of damage covered by the policy, and are known as the split limits.

With the numbers listed in the liability auto insurance above, an insurance company would pay for as much as:

  • $50,000 of bodily injury damages to any single person
  • $100,000 total bodily injury damages caused to all people involved
  • and $25,000 of property damage
