Oregon Auto Insurance

Oregon auto insurance has many different requirements in order to legally operate a vehicle in the state. It operates as a tort state, which means Oregon drivers must carry legal liability coverage to cover expenses arising from personal injury and property damage in "at-fault" car accidents. All-in-all, Oregon has three types of coverage required for motorists:

  • Basic liability insurance
  • Uninsured motorist bodily injury protection
  • Personal injury protection (PIP)

Required Coverage in Oregon

Oregon auto insurance liability coverage minimums can be no less than 25/50/10. What that number means is that when an accident occurs, that level of liability coverage would pay up to $25,000 per person injured, a maximum of $50,000 for all injured, and up to $10,000 for any property damages.

The uninsured motorist bodily injury protection must be at the same levels of 25/50. If a person hit you without proper insurance, this coverage would pay up to $25,000 per person injured and with a maximum of $50,000.

Finally, the PIP coverage must be at a minimum of $10,000. This coverage pays medical expenses, funeral costs, and loss of wages reimbursement regardless of who was at fault in the accident. It covers everyone in your car, including passengers.

Additional options to consider when choosing car insurance in Oregon are listed below:

  • Collision coverage will provide you with compensation for damage to your vehicle even when you are at fault in an accident.
  • Comprehensive coverage will compensate you for property loss or damages caused by theft, vandalism, or weather.
  • Uninsured motorist property damage coverage will insure you against property damages caused if a driver without insurance hits your vehicle.

Oregon Rates

Oregon auto insurance ranked 28th in the country for amount of money spent on car insurance in recent review. The average cost of coverage in the state was $734.99. Oregon drivers spent on average $477.59 on liability, $237.49 on collision, and $110.23 for comprehensive coverage according to the survey.

How Carriers Determine Rates

How exactly do insurance companies calculate auto insurance rates in Oregon? The most significant portion of their rate equation is based upon individual risk factors of drivers. The factors may include such traits and behaviors as age, sex, town of residence, type of vehicle, and driving record. The riskier a driver is determined to be, the more they will pay for their coverage.

Another less significant portion of the costs are influenced by statewide factors. This may include overall risk due to the number of tickets and accidents on Oregon roads, or business factors such as cost of operations and corporate tax rates.
